How Long Fajr Lasts in Karachi

Fajr begins at true dawn, subh-e-sadiq, when a thin band of white light spreads along the eastern horizon over the city. That happens when the sun is 18° below the horizon. Fajr ends at sunrise. Today in Karachi the window runs from 5:17 AM to 6:34 AM, which is 1 hour 17 minutes.

Karachi sits closer to the equator than the rest of Pakistan’s big cities, so dawn turns into sunrise faster here. The Fajr window in Karachi is never longer than about 1 hour 30 minutes, around 18 June, and drops to about 1 hour 15 minutes around 10 March. In Lahore or Faisalabad the same window stretches up to 1 hour 40 minutes. Do not plan on the extra time those cities have.

The Prophet ﷺ said, “The time of Fajr is from the appearance of dawn as long as the sun has not risen” (Sahih Muslim 612). In the Hanafi school, if the sun rises while you are still in the two fard rakats, the prayer does not count and must be made up after sunrise, so leave yourself enough time.

Karachi Prays Fajr Later Than Most of Pakistan

Pakistan Standard Time is set for a line of longitude far to the east of Karachi, so the sun rises later on Karachi’s clocks than in the north. On 10 October 2026, for example, Fajr in Karachi began 31 minutes after Lahore and 26 minutes after Islamabad. Quetta, which lies almost due north of Karachi, is within a minute or two. Only towns further west along the Balochistan coast, such as Gwadar, pray later than Karachi.

If you travel between Karachi and Lahore or Islamabad, do not carry your home city’s Fajr time with you. A 30-minute gap is enough to miss the prayer or to pray before its time.

How Fajr Time Changes Through the Year in Karachi

The earliest Fajr in Karachi comes around 7 June at 4:13 AM, and the latest around 10 January at 5:58 AM. That is a swing of 1 hour 45 minutes, smaller than in northern cities because Karachi’s days change length less across the seasons. Even in June, a Fajr alarm at about 4:00 AM is enough in Karachi.

Why Some Apps Show Fajr Later in Karachi

The calculation method used across Pakistan carries the city’s own name: the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method, with dawn at 18°. Some apps and websites use other methods with dawn at 15°, and they put Karachi’s Fajr about 13 minutes later. On 10 October 2026 they showed 5:25 AM where this page shows 5:12 AM. Following the later time is risky, above all in Ramadan, when sehri must end at the true start of Fajr.

Fajr and Sehri in Ramadan

In Ramadan, eating and drinking stop when Fajr begins. The azan from your local masjid may come a few minutes after that, so go by the clock, not by the azan. Our sehri and iftar time in Karachi timetable is worked out from this same Fajr time.

Ishraq Time in Karachi

Ishraq is a voluntary prayer of two or four rakats after the sun has fully risen. In Karachi today it can be prayed from 6:49 AM to 9:25 AM. The Prophet ﷺ forbade praying while the sun is rising (Sahih Muslim 831), which is why Ishraq starts about 15 minutes after sunrise. Jami’ at-Tirmidhi (586) records the reward of a Hajj and an Umrah for whoever prays Fajr in congregation, sits remembering Allah until sunrise, and then prays two rakats.

How Many Rakats Are in Fajr?

Four in total: two sunnah mu’akkadah, then two fard. The Prophet ﷺ said the two sunnah of Fajr “are better than this world and everything in it” (Sahih Muslim 725), so try not to skip them even when you are late.

The Prayer That Tests the Heart

The Prophet ﷺ said that no prayer is heavier on the hypocrites than Fajr and Isha, and that if people knew their reward they would come to them even crawling (Sahih al-Bukhari 657). The two prayers are linked: an early Isha makes it easier to wake for Fajr. Check tonight’s Isha time in Karachi and plan your sleep around it.
